Today’s DIY and How To segment is How to Style a Mantel. And who better to teach us then Emily Henderson, HGTV Design Star 2010 and host/stylist of Secrets from a Stylist on HGTV. Her How to Style Your Mantel video gives you three options to choose from when choosing pieces for your own space. Remember, your mantel is the focal point of your living room, so you want it to reflect your style and beauty. First, you can use a large painting that is beautiful and can stand on it’s own. Troubleshooting tip: Be sure the piece is large enough to fill the space.
The second option is to style different artwork together. The key is to use different sized paintings and to have odd numbers. Be sure to layer the artwork in front of one another. I love how Chris Shands styled her mantel, as seen in her home tour, with three simple yet elegant pieces. It can be that easy.
Emily starts off with three different sized paintings; however, she was not happy with all of the hard edges. She changes out one of the paintings with a beautiful arrangement of pink peonies to give the mantel more color, rounder shapes and soft edges. Voila!
The third option is to create a collection of objects, art and books. Troubleshooting tip: Make sure they all work well together. Pick items different in size and shape, and be sure to layer items in front of one another and on top of each other as seen here. Thank you Emily for these great tips!
