Bar stools are not just for the bar. In our kitchen, we have an island with three bar stools. Our kitchen cabinets are light colored wood and our wooden stools are of the same color. If I were to change and update these, there are so many counter stools to choose from. They come in all types of materials and designs. Comfort would be a priority, since we sit on them every night. Height and weight are just as important as color and style in my opinion.
